The Cultures and Societies major at Duke Kunshan University (DKU), open to the Class of 2029 and beyond, critically examines diverse societies and cultures with tracks in Cultural Anthropology and Sociology. Students analyze how social structures, institutions, and cultural norms influence individual and collective life. The curriculum emphasizes both 'top-down' (institutional/social structure-focused) and 'bottom-up' (community/individual-focused) perspectives. Students in the Cultural Anthropology track gain a holistic and critical understanding of meanings and norms in practice, exploring their interaction with material world aspects like media and technology. Sociology track students develop sociological imagination to analyze how societal forces shape personal experiences, using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Both tracks stress practice-based, empirical research, preparing graduates for careers in government, NGOs, journalism, consulting, human resources, marketing, and for social sciences graduate studies. Instruction is in English, conducted in small discussion-based classes on DKU’s Kunshan campus with a semester at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Graduates receive degrees from Duke Kunshan University and Duke University.
