The MScR in Bioengineering is a research-based master’s within the College of Science & Engineering. It is delivered through the Institute for Bioengineering (IBioE), which connects engineering, physical sciences, biology and medicine to develop innovative diagnostic and therapeutic biomedical devices and technologies. Key research themes include: Synthetic Biology (engineering biological devices and systems for therapeutic to environmental applications); Tissue Engineering (3D/2D scaffolds and guidance cues, including lab‑on‑chip technologies); Biomedical Modelling and Measurement (modelling and experimental, largely non‑invasive, characterization of biological materials for applications such as prosthetics and vascular failure prediction); and Biomedical Devices and Sensors (silicon-based sensors for biological parameters and disease/therapy biomarkers, often in collaboration with chemistry). MScR students focus on an independent research project under supervision and are supported by University-wide transferable skills training via the Institute for Academic Development (IAD), with encouragement to present at conferences and publish during the programme.
