The MSc by Research in Scandinavian Studies is a one-year research degree designed for a focused piece of independent research under expert supervision, either via two research assignments plus a 15,000-word dissertation (Pathway 1) or a single 30,000-word dissertation (Pathway 2). It is positioned as a strong stepping stone to a PhD while also valued as a standalone qualification. Edinburgh is one of the few UK centres for modern Scandinavian languages and has taught and supervised research across Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and the wider Nordic region since 1987; Scandinavian Studies research at Edinburgh was submitted to REF 2021 within Modern Languages and Linguistics, contributing to the University’s top-tier UK standing.
