The Japanese MScR is a research-led master’s degree designed for completing a focused, independent research project in Japanese Studies under supervision, culminating in research assignments and a 15,000-word dissertation. It is positioned as strong preparation for a PhD while also standing as a valuable terminal qualification. Japanese Studies at Edinburgh (first taught in 1976) supports a wide spectrum of research across history, politics, performing and literary arts, with School research excellence evidenced by REF 2021 submissions across Modern Languages and Linguistics, Politics and International Studies, Sociology, History, and Theology and Religious Studies.
