The MSc in Intellectual History introduces the principal methods of practising intellectual history and develops detailed understanding of major episodes and themes, emphasising the interdependence of text and context and the historical change of ideas. Students build skills in constructing coherent arguments orally and in writing, reading texts critically and situating them in their intellectual and practical contexts, and engaging with cross-disciplinary approaches bridging philosophy, science and history. The programme is assessed primarily by essays and a 15,000-word dissertation, and includes core training in historical research skills and methodology plus a range of themed option courses. Graduates progress to PhD preparation or careers across museums, policy think tanks, civil service, NGOs, galleries, libraries, heritage trusts, as well as fields like business, media, public administration and marketing.
