Design Informatics at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) is a joint master’s programme between ECA and the School of Informatics that positions data as a material for design, blending speculative, critical and practice-based studio work with technical training in coding, data, AI and physical computing. MA students are enrolled via ECA, while the MSc route is via the School of Informatics; both cohorts study together and complete largely the same courses, differing mainly in application requirements and some dissertation timing. Core study includes Data Science for Design, Design with Data, case studies and a research-led dissertation/major project. An extended MFA route (21 months) is also offered through ECA. Product Design Engineering (with School of Engineering) is a joint offering that integrates design methods with engineering analysis to create and prototype products; it is delivered in collaboration with the School of Engineering, emphasizing interdisciplinary project work and industry-informed practice.
