The MSW – Social Work Practice with Older Adults and Families from a Lifespan Perspective Pathway at the University of Michigan School of Social Work prepares students to work effectively with aging adults and their families by developing advanced skills to address the diverse psychosocial, health, and policy issues facing older adults throughout the lifespan. The curriculum builds on the core MSW generalist foundation and includes 12 specialized credit hours focused on aging and families within diverse social and cultural contexts. Students are trained to provide clinical services, develop programs, and advocate for policies supporting older adults and their families, integrating an understanding of discrimination, intersectionality, and social justice. Students may also engage in research and community-based field placements in hospitals, senior centers, skilled nursing facilities, and community programs. Graduates are prepared for careers as adult protective services workers, hospice or palliative care social workers, case managers, and program planners.
