The University of Michigan’s Secondary Teacher Education program at the Marsal Family School of Education prepares students for state certification to teach middle and high school (grades 6–12, with future certifications shifting to grade bands 5–9 and 7–12 starting Fall 2026). Students complete their major/degree in a content field (e.g., Mathematics, English, Science) and pursue professional teaching coursework and practicum experiences. The program emphasizes subject-matter depth, social justice, equity in education, and extensive field practice. Upon completion, students are recommended for certification by the State of Michigan. The program allows students to remain in their home college (such as the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts) and add certification to their content bachelor’s degree, or to transfer into the program as juniors. An additional endorsement in ESL is available, but only in conjunction with another subject area.
