The Program in the Environment (PitE) at the University of Michigan, jointly managed by the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the School for Environment and Sustainability, offers an interdisciplinary major in environmental studies. The curriculum integrates natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, focusing on complex human–environment interactions. Students gain foundational and specialized knowledge in ecology, sustainability, environmental justice, policy, and practical problem-solving. Field-based and project-based learning are emphasized, and all majors complete a required practical experience and choose a specialization. The program prepares graduates to be informed citizens and leaders with critical thinking and communication skills for environmental advocacy.
