The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Design & Production at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance is an undergraduate program that prepares students to lead and collaborate in the performing arts industry. The curriculum is flexible, enabling students to focus on a specific discipline or explore multiple areas within theatre design and production, including stage management, scenic, costume, and lighting design, and technical crafts. Emphasis is placed on hands-on learning through involvement in major stage productions in theatre, opera, musical theatre, and dance. Students are evaluated through annual portfolio reviews and gain experience through both mainstage university projects and local professional collaborations. The program encourages creative growth, technical mastery, and comprehensive knowledge of visual communication, management, and production technologies. The credit split is approximately 68% in SMTD courses and 32% in liberal arts courses. Requirements include a portfolio, interview, resume, and relevant documentation. Graduates are equipped for careers in theatre and allied arts, and their work is showcased in annual public exhibitions.
