The Bachelor of Music in Music Theory at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD) is designed for students wishing to balance theoretical and applied approaches to the study of music. The curriculum includes analysis, counterpoint, improvisation, composition, aesthetics, music cognition, and music technology. Performance and ensemble participation are integrated, offering a broad musical foundation. The coursework breakdown is approximately 75% within SMTD and 25% from liberal arts. Notably, this degree admits only transfer students (from U-M or elsewhere) with at least one full year of postsecondary music theory coursework and does not accept direct first-year applicants.
