The Stamps School of Art & Design's BFA in Art & Design emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, project development, community engagement, collaboration, and technical mastery. The curriculum combines foundational studio training with opportunities for academic exploration—students take both required and elective studio and academic courses. The first year offers foundational studio skill-building; from the second year, students have wide flexibility to choose studio electives and make interdisciplinary academic connections, culminating in advanced studio work in the final years. The program fosters interdisciplinary engagement across the University of Michigan and encourages study abroad opportunities, preparing students for success in a globalized creative field. Students must complete at least 128 credits, including 66-72 studio and 56-62 academic credits. Required foundation studio courses include Drawing, 2D, 3D, and 4D work, while required academic courses focus on art history and writing in art and design. The program supports flexibility for students to pursue minors or double degrees outside the Stamps School and values hands-on, project-based learning.
