The Bachelor of Arts in English at the University of Washington's College of Arts & Sciences provides students with a comprehensive, historically grounded education in English literature from Britain, the United States, and the expanding field of worldwide Anglophone literature. The program emphasizes literary analysis, interpretive theory, historical and political context, and critical thinking skills through a rigorous curriculum structured around three central principles: historical depth, power and difference, and reflexive awareness of genre, method, and language. Students can specialize within these areas while also developing skills in critical writing, analysis, and creativity. The program prepares graduates for careers in education, writing, and diverse professional fields or for further study at the postgraduate level. Students must complete core courses (English 202, 302, and a Senior Capstone), distribute courses across the three primary areas, and may specialize or craft a personalized study plan within department guidelines. Creative writing opportunities are also available.
