The Local Government Management concentration within the Master of Public Administration (MPA) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (School of Government) is designed to prepare students for leadership roles in local government and public service. The program emphasizes practical and theoretical knowledge in environmental, economic, and community development. Students will develop skills in policy implementation, evaluation, organization development, ethics, intergovernmental relations, and budgeting. The School of Government is the nation’s largest university-based training and advisory organization for public officials, providing students with direct connections to real-world practitioners and expert faculty. The MPA program is accredited by NASPAA and ranked #2 nationally for local government management. Students complete a minimum of 45 credit hours, including core courses, electives (minimum 9 credits in local government management), a practicum, an applied research problem, and a final oral examination. Graduates are prepared for impactful careers building and improving local communities.
