The MSW/MPA Joint Degree program at the University of Pittsburgh allows students to earn both a Master of Social Work from the School of Social Work and a Master of Public Administration from the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA). Students complete required core courses in both programs, with selected courses counting as electives across both degrees, thus reducing total coursework and program length. This dual program prepares graduates for leadership roles in public service, nonprofit management, and social policy, developing advanced skills in both direct social work practice and administration/governance. Field placements and internships are integral parts of the program, combining hands-on experience in social work and public sector management. Students are required to be admitted to both the MSW and MPA programs to participate.
