The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish at the University of Pittsburgh's Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences is a balanced program combining courses to strengthen students' oral and written skills in Spanish, as well as to introduce them to the study of Spanish and Latin American literatures and cultures. The major requires the completion of 38 credits and recommends study abroad in a Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking country. Students must first complete four introductory Spanish language courses before declaring the major, with a grade of B+ or higher required in the advanced course (SPAN 0004). Electives in the major span topics such as Colonial Literatures and Cultures, Latin American Novel, and U.S. Latino Literature and Film. The program also supports cross-disciplinary opportunities, including Portuguese and Hispanic language minors, and offers teacher certification routes in collaboration with the School of Education.
