The Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil) at the University of Pittsburgh David C. Frederick Honors College is a unique, research-focused undergraduate honors degree that requires students to complete an individually approved program of study demonstrating breadth and depth in their field(s), undertake faculty-mentored independent research, and successfully defend a thesis before a committee including an external examiner. The degree is jointly awarded by the Honors College and the student's primary school/college. It is regarded as equivalent in rigor to a graduate-level research experience and replaces the standard BA or BS upon graduation. Curricula are customized and typically require multiple majors, minors, or certificates, unified by a strong research component. Students are expected to maintain at least a 3.50 GPA.
