The Master of Arts in History at the University of Virginia’s College of Arts & Sciences provides students comprehensive training in historical research, analysis, and writing. The program emphasizes critical thinking and scholarly methods, requiring at least 24 credits of graded coursework, including foundational courses such as Approaches to Historical Study and a Master’s Essay Writing course. Many areas of specialization exist, encompassing cultural/social history, political history, race and ethnicity, and more. Some tracks require demonstration of foreign language proficiency. The MA culminates in an oral defense of a significant piece of written work. All program requirements must be completed by the end of the third semester.
