The Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Virginia's College of Arts and Sciences is an interdisciplinary program offering core training in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages (classical and modern), along with extensive coursework in literature, culture, and area studies. Students choose a primary cultural concentration—Chinese, Japanese, or Korean—and fulfill advanced language requirements alongside courses in history, humanities, and social sciences. The curriculum prepares students for graduate study or careers in fields such as government, journalism, banking, international business, and communications, with a strong emphasis on oral proficiency and pedagogical methodology. Study abroad and summer programs are strongly encouraged for language and cultural immersion.
