The Systems and Synthetic Biology Bachelor of Science at College of Biological Sciences, UC Davis, gives students a broad and interdisciplinary understanding of two fast-evolving fields. Systems biology seeks to explain how complex biological properties and structures emerge from simpler components and their interactions, focusing on design principles common to various kinds of biological regulation. Synthetic biology centers on modifying or constructing organisms to produce new biological pathways or capabilities. The curriculum emphasizes integrative, computational, and quantitative approaches, preparing students with foundational courses in chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and computing, progressing to advanced topics in systems theory, computer science, and biological engineering. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and further graduate study.
