The International Studies adjunct major at Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, Northwestern University, is designed to provide students with a broad, interdisciplinary understanding of global issues. The program is taken in conjunction with a disciplinary major and aims to complement students’ primary fields by introducing perspectives spanning contemporary politics, society, culture, and more. Students must take core courses in global history, economy and markets, and US foreign policy, and then select a thematic concentration (such as Global Humanities, Political Economy, Borders and Boundaries, or Global Law and Society). The curriculum is flexible, allowing each student to design a unique pathway across relevant disciplines. Students also complete either an integrated research seminar or an honors thesis as their capstone experience. The International Studies program includes co-curricular components such as seminars, research support, and career counseling. The program has a strong focus on language proficiency, requiring at least three foreign language courses and two-year proficiency.
