MIT EECS awards the SM as the first graduate degree for students admitted to the EECS doctoral program; all PhD students earn the SM on the way to the PhD. The program is research-intensive, pairing graduate subjects with supervised research leading to an SM thesis in an EECS area such as electrical engineering, computer science, or AI+D.
