MIT’s School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences offers a disciplinary major in Literature (Course 21L) leading to the SB degree. Literature is one of the SHASS disciplinary majors that students can pursue in addition to minors and concentrations; SHASS hosts over 30 fields and fulfills the Institute HASS Requirement, with Literature listed as a standalone major option for undergraduates. The Literature field resides within the Department of Humanities (Course 21) alongside Anthropology, Comparative Media Studies/Writing, Global Languages, History, and Music and Theater Arts; students take advanced humanistic subjects and research offerings designated 21L within this structure. SHASS updates undergraduate offerings each term (including Fall 2025 subjects) that feed into HASS concentrations, minors, and majors, providing current pathways for 21L coursework.
