MIT’s Department of Linguistics and Philosophy offers a joint undergraduate major, Course 24-2, with two tracks: a linguistics track and a philosophy track. Both tracks share a core spanning linguistics and philosophy to teach the central facts and issues in the study of language and representation of knowledge; each track then specializes via track-specific subjects to prepare students for graduate study in linguistics or in philosophy/cognitive science. The linguistics track requires foundational subjects such as Introduction to Linguistics (24.900/24.9000) and the Language and Its Structure sequence in Phonology (24.901), Syntax (24.902), and Semantics and Pragmatics (24.903), plus CI‑M communication-intensive work through 24.918 Workshop in Linguistic Research and an advanced analysis subject (e.g., Field Methods in Linguistics or Advanced Topics in Linguistic Analysis). Students must also satisfy MIT’s GIRs (including HASS, REST, and Laboratory) toward the SB degree, with some requirements fulfillable within Course 24 subjects.
