The Bachelor of Science in Comparative Media Studies integrates the study of contemporary media (film, television, digital systems/games, social media, and interactive forms) with a broad historical understanding of older forms of human expression. It emphasizes comparative, cross-media analysis and media-making practice, drawing on humanistic disciplines to prepare students for advanced study or careers in media and related industries. The SB requires 10 subjects: CMS.100 Introduction to Media Studies; one Media Practice and Production subject; CMS.701 Current Debates in Media (CI-M); a second CI-M subject; and six electives. A pre-thesis tutorial (CMS.THT) and thesis (CMS.THU) may substitute for one elective. The SHASS Dean’s Office provides an example 4-year roadmap for the CMS SB, including how to combine CMS with engineering/science majors (e.g., Course 6-1) via double or joint majors. CMS/Writing offers both bachelor’s and master’s programs within SHASS.
