MIT DMSE’s ABET‑accredited undergraduate major (Course 3) provides a comprehensive foundation linking processing, microstructure, properties, and applications of modern materials. Students complete required core subjects in the first four terms of the program, then pursue restricted electives across major material classes (biomaterials, ceramics, electronic materials, metals, polymers) and cross‑cutting topics. A culminating senior thesis or industry‑based internship reports develops original research and communication skills. The program prepares graduates for immediate roles in materials‑related industries and for graduate study; graduates pursue roles across manufacturing, technology, energy, and more, and the curriculum emphasizes problem solving, design, experimentation, ethics, teamwork, and lifelong learning outcomes aligned with ABET.
