MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s undergraduate major (Course 1, officially 1-ENG) is an ABET-accredited general engineering SB that builds a civil and environmental engineering foundation and allows students to pursue specialized tracks through a flexible curriculum. The program integrates engineering with chemistry, biology, physics, computer science, machine learning, and urban planning to address sustainable infrastructure, environmental remediation, clean energy, disaster resilience, and related societal-scale challenges. Students engage in UROP research and hands-on fieldwork; the curriculum is designed to dovetail with the department’s professional 9‑month MEng or research SM/PhD pathways.
