MIT Architecture’s Course 4-B leads to the Bachelor of Science in Art and Design (BSAD), one of the department’s two undergraduate majors. The BSAD begins with two sequential introductory design studios (4.021 and 4.022), adds a junior-year choice of a third design studio, and requires four foundational subjects across design, art, computation, and history. Students then select four interdisciplinary subjects grouped around the themes of objects, information, and art & experience. A thesis preparation subject is required, and a senior-year thesis is presented. The program is situated within MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning and provides a broad design-centered education that can lead to diverse careers or serve as preparation for graduate professional study (e.g., MArch). The department lists BSAD among its seven degree programs.
