The Master of Arts in Anthropology program at UC Irvine’s School of Social Sciences offers advanced coursework in anthropology with a concentration in Medicine, Science, and Technology Studies (MSTS). This is the only terminal M.A. degree in the UC system focused specifically on medical anthropology or science and technology studies. The program prepares students for research and applied work related to the cultural impacts of medicine, science, and technology, offering training suitable for careers in academia, public health, the technology sector, and non-profit organizations. The M.A. degree is usually earned as part of the PhD track upon advancement to candidacy or through the MSTS concentration. As of recent years, external applications specifically for the MSTS track are not being accepted; the majority of MA degrees are obtained by students already enrolled in a UCI graduate program.
