The M.A. in Comparative Literature at UC Irvine emphasizes transnational comparatism, critically analyzing literatures beyond the Euro-American zone to include the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The program is heavily interdisciplinary, encouraging engagement with critical theory (including Marxism, psychoanalysis, materialism, and postcolonial theory), environmental studies, visual culture, and more. The cohort is research-focused and the MA is treated as a step toward the PhD, with all students expected to continue on to the doctoral program. Students work closely with faculty, culminating in an MA paper and a comprehensive exam that serve as a bridge to the PhD qualifying examination.
