The 4+1 M.A. in Art History is a graduate program that allows current UCI undergraduate students from any major to achieve a master's degree in Art History in one additional year beyond the bachelor's degree. The program is designed to provide advanced disciplinary training, covering American, Asian, and European art history. Students start graduate-level courses in their senior undergraduate year, then spend one additional year focusing on seminars and independent thesis research. The curriculum emphasizes theoretical, methodological, and critical approaches in art history, preparing students for doctoral study or careers in museums, galleries, and educational institutions. The master’s thesis, completed under faculty supervision, demonstrates independent research ability. Participants enjoy unique mentorship and professional development opportunities.
