The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at the University of California, Irvine, offered by the School of Physical Sciences, provides a comprehensive foundation in mathematical theory and its applications. Students can select from three main tracks: a broad pure mathematics track, a specialization in mathematics for education, and a concentration in mathematics for education/secondary teaching certification. The curriculum covers fundamental areas such as single-variable and multivariable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, numerical analysis, abstract algebra, probability, and real analysis. Students may enter the program as freshmen or transfer students. Transfer admissions give preference to junior-level students with strong overall grades and completion of at least one year of approved calculus; further studies in multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations are recommended. The program prepares graduates for careers in teaching, research, science, and technology, as well as for advanced study.
