The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Dance at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, University of California Irvine, is a specialized undergraduate program designed for students pursuing professional careers as performers or choreographers. The curriculum balances rigorous technique classes (covering genres such as modern, ballet, jazz, hip hop, and contemporary) with courses in choreography, dance science (kinesiology), history, theory, criticism, and music for dance. The B.F.A. curriculum demands additional advanced coursework in either Performance or Choreography, preparing students to achieve high-level artistic and technical excellence. Students actively participate in multiple annual concerts including faculty, guest, graduate, and undergraduate showcases—such as the BFA Thesis Concerts culminating senior year, and Dance Escape featuring bold, original choreography. To be admitted, all applicants must audition, and those wishing to major in B.F.A. Performance or Choreography must declare after completing at least one year of study (for Choreography, after finishing the Choreography I course series). Placement in technique classes is determined by audition. The program fosters interdisciplinary exchange and offers additional opportunities in opera/musical theatre. Graduates can pursue professional careers as dancers, choreographers, educators, or arts administrators, with a comprehensive skill set in both performance and creative practice.
