The BA in Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Iowa enables students to achieve advanced proficiency in either Chinese or Japanese while gaining broad exposure to Asian civilizations, including their histories, literatures, and cultures. The program is designed to cultivate language competence, deep cultural knowledge, and critical thinking skills. Students engage in coursework spanning language instruction, literature, history, anthropology, political science, religion, and art. The major is suitable for those interested in international careers, further academic study, or teaching. A minimum of 120 s.h. is required, with 27–32 s.h. in major-specific coursework depending on the language track. Students must complete the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences GE CLAS Core. The department strongly encourages study abroad and offers a range of student organizations and multicultural engagement opportunities.
