The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is an intensive, professionally oriented visual art degree, designed for those pursuing careers as artists or designers. First-year students undertake foundational courses, introducing materials, techniques, language, and concepts of art through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates hands-on practice with formal, conceptual, and critical skills. Upon completion of the foundations program, students select a concentration within six studio disciplines and can further explore design and creative technologies. Core requirements also include art history and general education; BFA students are exempt from the foreign language requirement. The degree culminates with a senior thesis consisting of a body of work, written thesis, oral defense, and a solo exhibition, preparing graduates for careers or advanced study in art.
