The Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies (through BDIC) at UMass Amherst is an individualized undergraduate major structured by the Interdepartmental Program in Film Studies and pursued via the Bachelor’s Degree with Individual Concentration (BDIC). Students develop their own plan of study—which includes film history, theory, genre/auteur studies, criticism, and production—by combining core requirements with electives that allow for specialization in areas such as film theory, world cinema, production, or self-designed topics. The program is interdisciplinary, drawing on faculty and coursework from 15 departments. Students benefit from hands-on learning, potential internships, study abroad, and engagement with visiting cinema professionals. Graduates are prepared for careers in film, media, academia, or for further graduate study.
