UMass Amherst's Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Community Development is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program offered by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The curriculum equips students with theoretical and practical expertise in designing and planning sustainable communities, addressing equity, economic, and environmental concerns. Students choose or combine among four concentrations: Urban Studies, Landscape Studies, Horticulture Studies, and Built Environment. Study areas include public participation, sustainable city planning, local economic development, and climate change mitigation. The program prepares graduates for careers in nonprofit organizations, government agencies, community development, as well as the private sector, or graduate studies (including fast-track Master’s options in Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning). Courses emphasize leadership, change facilitation, and interdisciplinary work at various scales.
