The Boston University College of Fine Arts offers a Master of Arts in Art Education designed for current and aspiring art educators. The program emphasizes the academic and practical aspects of teaching art, curriculum development, research, and studio practice. Students can pursue the MA through an online format suited to working professionals or a campus-based format. The curriculum focuses on the integration of studio art practice with pedagogical methods informed by up-to-date theory and research. The program aims to enhance teaching skills, leadership abilities, and critical knowledge in contemporary art education. Typically completed in 18–24 months online (or 2 years full-time on campus), the MA requires completion of 32 units, including core courses, electives, and a capstone research project. There is an optional 'Summer Studios' residency for intensive hands-on art practice. The traditional MA is for those who already hold a teaching license or are not seeking licensure, while a separate MA with Initial License is designed for those aiming for public school teaching certification. As of August 2025, the program is not accepting new applicants for Fall 2025 (expected to reopen for Fall 2026).
