The MESM at the Bren School, UC Santa Barbara, is a 2-year professional master's program designed to train students as environmental problem-solvers capable of working at the intersection of science, management, policy, law, and business. The curriculum includes nine required core courses covering natural sciences, economics, policy, law, and business, plus elective coursework in one of seven specializations: Business and Sustainability, Coastal Resources Management, Conservation Planning, Environmental Policy, Energy and Climate, Pollution Prevention and Remediation, or Water Resources Management. Students can further pursue focus areas in Environmental Innovation & Entrepreneurship and Strategic Environmental Communication & Media. The degree culminates in an extensive year-long group project or Eco-Entrepreneurship project with external stakeholders, simulating real-world professional practice and interdisciplinary collaboration. MESM graduates are equipped for roles in industry, government, NGOs, and academia addressing complex environmental challenges.
