The Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and Biochemistry at the College of Creative Studies, UCSB, is designed for highly motivated undergraduates with strong interests in chemistry and biochemistry. The CCS offers a unique, flexible, and research-focused environment known as a 'graduate school for undergrads.' Students are encouraged to accelerate into advanced coursework and original research early in their studies, often skipping standard introductory sequences; the curriculum emphasizes creativity and independent learning. There are few general education requirements. CCS students have the freedom to enroll in almost any UCSB course (including graduate-level classes with instructor permission) and benefit from a non-competitive grading system based on unit completion rather than letter grades. Each student is paired with a faculty adviser, and undergraduate research is highly integral: students in this program often publish in peer-reviewed journals and may present at national and international conferences.
