The Bachelor of Arts in Ancient Studies at Columbia University School of General Studies is an interdisciplinary program designed for students interested in the civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean and Mesopotamia. Students explore the cultural context of these societies and specialize in one area, utilizing perspectives from at least three disciplines such as anthropology, history, philosophy, art history, archaeology, and religion. The major requires 12 courses (a minimum of 36 points), including a Major Seminar, Senior Thesis, a sequence of ancient language courses at an intermediate level or above, introductory and advanced courses relevant to the ancient Mediterranean, and specialized courses for cultural concentration. The program encourages proficiency in ancient languages and deeper interdisciplinary learning to prepare students for advanced research or careers in related fields.
