The B.A. in Art History and Visual Arts at Columbia University’s School of General Studies is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program combining historical, analytical, and creative approaches to art. The major requires students to complete courses in both art history and visual studio practice, encompassing seven 3-point lecture courses in art history (including coverage of at least three historical periods and multiple world regions) and 21 points of visual arts courses (including basic drawing, sculpture, and advanced studio courses). In their senior year, students complete either a research seminar or a senior visual arts project. The program prepares graduates for further academic study or careers in the arts, museums, galleries, or creative industries. Admission is open to non-traditional students with at least a one-year educational break, and GS students complete the Columbia Core Curriculum.
