The B.A. in Mathematics at Columbia University School of General Studies is designed as an introduction to core areas of theoretical mathematics, tracing highlights of the field’s development over the past four centuries from a modern perspective. The program includes rigorous study in calculus, linear algebra, probability, and advanced electives such as differential equations, analysis, and discrete mathematics. Students also participate in seminars where they explore advanced topics and develop presentation skills. The major is suitable for those who wish to pursue further research, or careers in mathematics or related areas such as finance, computer science, actuarial science, and teaching. The School of General Studies specifically serves nontraditional students, who take the same courses and receive the same degree as other Columbia undergraduates, fully integrated with Columbia College.
