The BA in Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies at Columbia University's School of General Studies allows students to study the languages, cultures, history, and politics of the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa. Students can focus on one region ('track') or pursue a comparative/combined approach. All tracks include an approved introductory course, a seminar on regional texts, 'Theory and Culture,' five approved electives, and a regional language requirement (two years of Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish, Armenian, Hindi/Urdu, Sanskrit, or other relevant languages). Courses are interdisciplinary and may include topics such as Mughal India, Postcolonial Thought, Persianate culture, or Indian Ocean societies. The department emphasizes both depth in a single regional tradition and comparative perspectives across regions.
