Barnard College’s Bachelor of Arts in Italian is designed to develop proficiency in Italian language—including reading, writing, listening, and speaking—while immersing students in the literary and cultural traditions of Italy. The major requires completion of at least ten upper-level courses, focusing on advanced language study, introductory and advanced literature, cultural studies, and multiple electives. The curriculum covers Italian literature, film, and cultural analysis from the 13th century to present. Students who have prior knowledge may place out of introductory language courses via a placement exam. The program prepares graduates for careers or further study in language, literature, cultural analysis, and more.
