The Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Social Documentation at UC Santa Cruz is an innovative, interdisciplinary graduate program housed in the Film and Digital Media Department, Arts Division. The program is designed to critically analyze, frame, and document contemporary social issues through documentary media—including video, photography, animation, and other formats. Students engage in research that combines arts-based, social science, and humanities methodologies, and produce a thesis project involving well-researched, socially engaged, and aesthetically crafted documentary work. Graduates are prepared for careers in public broadcasting, independent production, museums, archives, and higher education, and are equipped to explore the relationships between media and social change.
