The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Environmental Art and Social Practice at UC Santa Cruz is a two-year, full-time, residential graduate program in the UCSC Arts Division. It is designed for students who seek careers in environmental art and social practice, integrating ecological thinking, social justice, and cross-disciplinary research. Coursework includes critical analysis, practical project-based research, and a mix of traditional and contemporary art media, grounded in engagement with social and environmental issues. Students have access to dedicated studio space, research centers, and collaborative community partnerships, as well as support for working with diverse technologies and media. The program places strong emphasis on contemporary urgencies including systemic social inequalities and environmental change, preparing graduates for roles as artists, educators, and researchers in this interdisciplinary and rapidly evolving field. Students complete at least 71 quarter units, including core practice-based research sequences, theory seminars, electives, project development, and a final thesis.
