The Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at UC Santa Cruz’s Baskin School of Engineering is an interdisciplinary, research-focused program designed to provide comprehensive training in both the theoretical and practical aspects of materials science. Students gain expertise in laboratory techniques, computational methods, and analytical theory valuable to sectors such as semiconductor materials, device processing, computer simulations, cryogenics, x-ray scattering, electronic, magnetic, photonic measurements, and bioelectronics. The program is supported by interdisciplinary faculty from engineering and science, offers lecture, laboratory, and experiential research opportunities, and emphasizes professional development and preparation for industry or doctoral studies. It offers two tracks: Plan I (Thesis, emphasizing research and recommended for those pursuing a PhD) and Plan II (Coursework, recommended for students seeking terminal master's and industrial careers).
