The Bachelor of Arts in Biotechnology at the Baskin School of Engineering, UC Santa Cruz, is designed for students who intend to work in roles within the biotechnology industry that require a broad understanding of the field—such as writers, ethicists, executives, sales, regulators, or policymakers—but who do not need the intensive technical training required for laboratory science or engineering roles. The program is deliberately flexible and suitable as a double major for students in the humanities, arts, or social sciences. Coursework includes survey and technical courses, ethical implications of biotechnology, and a unique capstone in entrepreneurial planning. The program does not require wet-lab courses and emphasizes the societal impact of biotechnology. Students acquire familiarity with key biotechnologies, apply ethical reasoning, and learn to make decisions about biotechnology in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts. Internship and career opportunities target biotech-related positions outside the lab.
