The Physics (Astrophysics) B.S. program at the University of California, Santa Cruz is designed to provide students a rigorous foundation in both fundamental physics and astrophysics. The program covers a wide array of subjects, including the structure and evolution of the universe, cosmology, stellar and planetary systems, exoplanets, supernovae, black holes, interstellar and intergalactic media. Students engage in hands-on experience with computational methods, astronomical observation, and scientific instrumentation. Research opportunities abound, particularly through the Theoretical Astrophysics Santa Cruz (TASC) Institute, University of California Observatories, and Lick Observatory. The curriculum emphasizes preparation for graduate studies and technical positions, and includes a senior thesis requirement that involves direct faculty mentorship and professional research experience.
